Our Kids See It All (This is Both Wonderful and Terrifying)

Do you ever have those moments when you see yourself flash across the face of your child?

When you hear your voice and your words come out of their mouths?

Even though my kids emulate my good qualities day-in-day-out, it makes me sit up and take notice when I observe my faults in them. I see myself when they’re annoyed with a sibling who just won’t stop. I see myself when they’re expressing frustration after accidentally dropping something. I see myself when it’s noisy and they bark at each other to quiet down.

“Ouch. That sounds just like me.”

They see how I handle frustration and follow suit.

They observe the attitudes I display when wronged.

They notice how I talk to their younger siblings when they’re struggling to make good choices.

They pay attention to how I act at home versus when we’re out.

They watch how I juggle the stresses of rushed moments.

They see everything.

We know this. I mean, how could we miss it? Our kids are emulating our good traits, but they’re also ingesting and displaying the bad.

I love that my kids see the good and the bad in me, because I want them to know I’m human. A fake mom who tries to hide her faults would be a lying mom, and that’s not what we’re going for. Lately I’ve been trying to ask myself, “How would I like my grandchildren to be parented?”

Whether we like it or not, our words and actions will echo through the generations. It’s both wonderful and terrifying, isn’t it?

As we move about our work as a mom, may we remember our faults do echo, but our love and faithfulness shout louder.
