With Easter just around the corner, and Spring getting ready to kick up its heels, we thought we’d take a second to chat about some of our favorite things during this season of commemorating our Savior’s death and resurrection.
As we near Easter, we’re on the lookout for ways to open our children’s eyes to the wonder of The Gift. For the gift of salvation is so much bigger than what we can fit into an Easter basket. And although Cadbury eggs are delicious and yummy, they disappear quickly. Unlike the gift of eternity.
So on that note, here are some seasonal recipes, traditions, sights, and sounds you may (or may not) want to incorporate into the celebration of Easter with your family this year.
Anne-Renee:
An Easter recipe: HOT-CROSS BUNS
This recipe is one that in all honesty, I have only made twice since becoming a mama myself. But I do remember my mom making these for Good Friday when I was little, and knowing that somehow, these rolls were special. Hot-Cross Buns are a round sticky bun, traditionally made with currants or raisins. The tell-tale sign of a Hot-Cross Bun is the visible cross on the top of the bun. Although if your children are anything like mine, the frosting cross is the first thing to get licked off.
An Easter tradition: RESURRECTION EGGS
For those of you not familiar with these particular kind of eggs, they’re not the edible kind. These plastic eggs are filled with items that tell the story of Jesus’ time here on earth, clear to the empty tomb. And if you are like me and want to know the history behind such a thing, here you go. There are several excellent books to accompany the eggs if you would like (or egg-cellent, for all you punny folk). Our family favorite is Benjamin’s Box. We read it year-round.
And for those of you wanting to save a few pennies, here’s a great way to make your own Resurrection Eggs.
Amanda:
An Easter learning experience: GARDEN TOMB
I dream of Israel. Someday, some year, I’d super love to make it to the Holy Land. But for now, I satisfy this longing by checking out books from the library and watching videos like this one. It’s riveting. For me, at least. Plus, it’s beautiful to be able to put a picture to the story of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection we know so well.
“The Garden Tomb is believed by many to be the garden and sepulchre of Joseph of Arimathea, and therefore a possible site of the resurrection of Jesus. The Garden is owned and administered by The Garden Tomb (Jerusalem) Association, a Christian non-denominational charitable trust based in the United Kingdom. The Garden Tomb is an alternative site to the famous Holy Sepulchre for you to consider the Crucifixion and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Garden is a beautiful place in which you will discover several things that were all here on the night Jesus died and which match the accounts in the four Gospels. We never claim to be in the right place as we could never prove that; but where Jesus died is of little importance compared with why. So here we ask you to open the Bible and see what it says about these vital Christian truths.” (gardentomb.com)
This speaks my language. P.S. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page linked above, you’ll find a vintage video of Billy Graham delivering a message in 1960 in front of the Garden Tomb. Wow. The end.
An Easter song: BECAUSE HE LIVES by Matt Maher
An anthem to proclaim everything Christ has done for us. Because He lives I can face tomorrow!
May our celebration of Christ and the resurrection during this season be less about us and more about Him and the great overcoming. Praise God for His indescribable gift!
